Better Than Wolves
- Note: no new items were introduced, this is entirely possible to do with a server-side addon
- TL;DR: in multiplayer, when you die, you can haunt a team mate for a certain amount of time, after which you can respawn next to them, but if there are no un-haunted team mates left, all dead friends HCS as a group
- A group of players on a server can be “soul-bonded” into a team
- Simplest method: an invite command that lets you invite players into your team
- Harder method: some in-game way to bond yourself to other players, though note it would need to be really early game, or it’s just annoying.
- When you die, you respawn randomly inside one of your team members and haunt them
- Each alive player can only be haunted by one team member
- If no un-haunted team member is available, you HCS
- Your camera is locked to their position
- You can still look around freely and help them out that way, checking their back, etc
- Logging out while haunting someone will make them un-haunted, and you will re-haunt another random team member when you next join the server. This can maybe be cheesed, but I’m not sure if it matters?
- At any point you can choose to HCS by yourself somehow (easiest way: command)
- Optional: further abilities to give to the haunting player, so that they can influence the world around their host, like for example allowing them to click monsters, making them more visible to the other player, or the haunting player could have limited night vision or what have you
- After a configurable amount of time, say one hour, the host can eat rotten flesh, and this will cut their health bar in half and respawn the other player on half health next to them
- Eating mystery meat has the same effect, but your health is not cut in half and there is no poisoning
- Eating rotten flesh or mystery meat before this time is over will kick the haunting player into another un-haunted team member, or cause mass expulsion (see later) if no un-haunted player is available
- Logging out while you’re haunted is the same as eating rotten flesh/mystery meat, which is really interesting, because it forces players to not log out for the night
- If a haunted player dies and there are no two un-haunted team members available, mass expulsion happens. All deceased players spawn together as a group on HCS.
- Team members who hardcore spawn in short succession get put in the same place, per usual, so others can join you
